Ohio Wesleyan University Nominates Obama for President
Edwards Chosen as Running Mate During Two-Day Mock Presidential Convention

DELAWARE, OHIO – It’s an Obama-Edwards ticket for Ohio Wesleyan University as students concluded their two-day Democratic Mock Presidential Convention today.

In a roll-call vote, convention-goers cast 56 percent of their presidential votes for Sen. Barack Obama, 27 percent for Sen. Hillary Clinton, and 17 percent for former Vice President Al Gore.

For Obama’s running mate, Ohio Wesleyan students cast 76 percent of their votes for Sen. John Edwards and 24 percent for TV icon and Obama supporter Oprah Winfrey.

During the Mock Convention, Ohio Wesleyan students also debated and amended a party platform and heard from both State of Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray and Ohio Democratic Party Executive Director Doug Kelly. Both men urged the students to remain engaged in the political process.

“If you want to make changes, you have to start now,” Kelly told students today. “What matters is you get involved.”

Ohio Wesleyan held its first Mock Convention in 1884, and since 1920 has conducted the event during nearly every presidential election.

Because the event always features the party out of the White House, the 2008 Mock Convention focused on the Democratic race. The theme of this year’s Mock Convention was “Democracy Restored: One Nation, Many Issues.”
